Fairness is your operating principle, not a preference. You split bills, lay out expectations upfront, and hold your own behavior to the same standard you apply to others — because that's what functional relationships actually require. Some find this cold or calculating. What they're actually experiencing is someone with clearly defined terms of engagement. You have zero interest in accumulated emotional debt, which means the relationships you do maintain are unusually clean and honest. Your challenge is that not everyone shares your sensitivity to reciprocity, which means you'll occasionally feel more invested in fairness than the other party.
